There are few things that scare an amateur golfer more than having to play a shot from the sand. It leads many a high handicapper to take up temporary residence in the bunker, as they hack and flail at the ball in a futile effort to lift it out of the sand and on to the otherwise inviting green. To the casual observer, these poor duffers look like they’re attempting to prove the old myth true by digging their way all the way to China, one giant sand divot at a time.

What exactly is it about these sand traps that cause amateurs such unrelenting pain? How can they go from building sand castles, to saving par? We’ll attempt to answer these and many other burning questions below.

Bunkers of course require a different approach than hitting from any other surface, and this usually the casual player’s downfall. Most amateurs attempt to play bunker shots like they would any other shot, which simply doesn’t work. With this approach, the casual player is likely to snag their club in the sand on their first two attempts, pushing the ball forward mere inches, then catching it clean on their third attempt, sending it sailing out of the bunker, over the green, and into the far green side bunker.

Bunkers shots must be approached differently, and this includes the way you align yourself with the ball, your swing plane, and more. With the proper training, players will quickly learn that there is absolutely nothing to fear in playing from the sand, and it may indeed be an advantageous position in some cases. This is evidenced by watching the pros, who will readily aim for green side bunkers on long approach shots (typically into par 5’s), rather than have the ball end up in the far more unpredictable clutches of the rough.

You see, for all the randomness that many players think the sand imparts, lies in the sand are often much more consistent and favourable than those in the rough. Save for the occasional plugged ball, bunker shots are usually quite routine for the skilled player.
But how to become skilled is the burning question on the minds of all you sand scaredy-cats. You simply need a good instructional foundation to work from to help build your confidence in the sand, from which point things will begin to snowball (though they’ll snowball uphill, not down – yes, it’s possible, trust us).

The PurePoint golf system is one of the most thorough systems available for detailing and breaking down bunker play, while remaining accessible and simple for even the most casual player. In this system you’ll learn how to address the ball, the proper backswing and downswing, the ideal follow through, how to control your distance from the sand, how to play long iron shots from those pesky fairway bunkers, and much more.

You’ll leave your training with this system filled to the brim with confidence, and ready and eager to take down any bunker that stands in your way. A day at the beach will never feel so good. Of course, if you’re British and have to deal with pot bunkers, ignore everything we’ve said and avoid the bunkers at all costs. Your sanity may depend on it. Good luck to all in your sandy endeavours.
